Residence for Students

As part of the Social Plan for Housing in Higher Education, the Polytechnic of Tomar (IPT) signed, on the 15th of September, the financing contract with the government for the construction of the new student residence, which will be in the first building of the IPT, at Av. Candido Madureira. The objective of the IPT is to increase the offer of accommodation, complementing the current on-campus residence that has a capacity for 220 students.

The newspaper “Cidade de Tomar” spoke with the administrator of the IPT, José Júlio Filipe, who gave us more details about this building which, according to him, “will have a capacity for 68 students and will have a great impact on the city, even more so because of its location central".

According to José Júlio Filipe, the process began when the IPT knew that, through the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), there was funding for the construction of affordable student housing. This was, in fact, according to him, a measure that came from behind, since the Ministry of Guardianship had already structured, for about two or three years, a national plan for housing higher education students in which it established a series of measures to enable institutions to meet the needs they had in terms of student accommodation, allowing the IPT to meet these needs by contracting external accommodation, in Tomar, with Residencial Santa Marta, and in Abrantes, with the Youth Hostel.

However, the need for the IPT was more in line with defining a more stable, more durable solution that, in some way, would become “a part of our equipment permanently available to students”, says José Júlio Filipe.

With the PRR, this opportunity arises to meet what the IPT needs and as soon as it was known, the IPT arranged a team to work on the project, an application was built, which was then submitted and now approved. (...)
